Golden yellow, deep teal and garnet red enliven the ivory glaze, framed by fine dark lines. Deep blue finishes the knob and the rim of the lid, and the pale body gives the richly patterned lid and borders room to shine.

A few drops of orange blossom water, a glass of tea poured from on high: such is the grace of a Moroccan welcome. Orange Blossom belongs to Blooms, our first drop of twenty-one flowers.

The motifs, one by one

  • Half stair frames each panel, drawn with a fine line and centred on an almond with beads.
  • Almond and netted almond appear in pairs, one solid, one finely hatched, like petals catching the light.
  • Chain with almonds, half-stairs and veins encircles the lid in a garland of colour.
  • Almonds chain and almonds and eyes chain trace the borders, while fields of bullets add depth.
  • Veins, almond-shaped fan, flower and veined flower bloom across the piece: the orange blossom itself, set in Moroccan ornament.
